"I feel like I just keep putting on weight, no matter how hard I try, but that’s just part of getting older right?"
WRONG!!!! Yes, of course there are some variables that absolutely - will cause you to put on weight. All the obvious guys in the room: reduce exercise (on account of not enough time in life need Hermione’s necklace), increased calorie intake, increased alcohol + eating all the foods YOU KNOW are going to bring that little extra love around your waist and give you back those cheeks your mum used to love.
But for the most part - there are intricate chemical, hormonal, gastrointestinal and metabolic imbalances that are driving this disordered and inefficient drive in energy metabolism.
But with all those obvious lads in mind - who here doesn’t do ANY of that —> eats like a sparrow, flogs themselves at the gym 1-2x daily and feels like if anything they are putting MORE WEIGHT ON?!?!?!
This my possums, is not your fault. And there are wonderful natural medicine solutions for you.
And sometimes (often) - putting all this stress on your body (depriving calories + whipping it like a greyhound) actually puts the body in a state of fear to the point that it won’t drop the weight because it is scared for it’s dear life. This is called hyper sympathetic nervous system dominance, generally partnered with a hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal-thyroid axis imbalance + without a doubt —> adrenal insufficiency. No prizes for guessing that this little pickle comes from S.T.R.E.S.S. The reason we end up with cortisol (our stress hormone) flying through our system like its a joy ride in Vegas.

Disordered cortisol secretion also leads to hormone imbalances (excess testosterone or testosterone deficiency) + chronic inflammation which is another key factor in stubborn weight gain. For men - low testosterone will give you that feminine fat deposition (around waist + hips; you will also be more prone to musculoskeletal injury, low libido + fertility). Ladies - this high testosterone is also a key cause of adult acne.
Another key investigation to explore is your thyroid - the master gland that controls your metabolism. Make sure you seek out support form a Naturopath to get a true comprehensive screening of this organ (Hypothyroidism is frequently missed in conventional medical clinics).
Women - be sure to also check out your prolactin, LH:FSH ratio; your Androgen profile + your insulin levels. Insulin resistant PCOS is another common player in stubborn weight in women.
Aside from this your gut, namely your microbiome has a HUGE influence on your metabolism; extensive clinical trials have been done to support this theory. Bacterial modulation and Gastrointestinal health is hugely indicated here.
Mitochondria function (the powerhouses of your cells), gut health decreasing inflammation, assessing hormone balance + adrenal gland function are always key investigations I make in my clinic when dealing with slow metabolisms.
So gorgeous people in a nutshell - you’re not crazy! And you’re not getting fat because you’re getting older. Do the proper investigations so you can get the right support to feel vital + in control of your body again ❤️
